Twenty-two workforce boards recently completed a survey to identify the skills gaps being experienced by employers across North Carolina, as a follow up to a similar project undertaken in 2007.
The survey, Closing the Gap, 2012 Skills Survey of North Carolina Employers, collected 1,152 surveys from managers of businesses and organizations across the state. Input was gathered from all 100 counties and showed that some business sectors are continuing to have issues finding qualified talent to fill open positions.
Lack of Soft Skills such as good communication, problem solving, good attendance and leadership abilities was found to be a serious problem and noted across all the business sectors surveyed. The majority (59%) said that good communication and interpersonal skills are the greatest weakness among job applicants.
